Masterclass Replay: Governance Over Generations: Experiences of Two Large, Hundred-Year Families on Sustaining Long-Term Governance

October 22, 2026

Sustaining family governance across generations requires regular attention to how decisions are made, responsibilities are shared and family members stay connected. For families with hundreds of members, these practices must adapt as each generation develops its own expectations and priorities.

In this masterclass replay, Langdon Evans and Isabel Carvajal Sardi join moderator Dennis Jaffe to discuss how their families have sustained governance across more than a century. The second session in the Governance Domain Faculty’s Masterclass series draws on their experience within large, geographically dispersed family communities.

Their discussion addresses:

  • Establishing consistent governance rules and revising them as family circumstances change.
  • Engaging rising generations through family meetings, education and shared responsibilities.
  • Maintaining family connection through regular communication, gatherings and traditions.
  • Addressing resistance to new expectations and governance practices.

Their experiences illustrate the ongoing work of sustaining family participation while allowing governance to change with the people it serves.
