Alvina Lo

Managing Director, Head of Advice, Planning & Fiduciary Services
BNY Wealth

In a world where clients seeking financial services are often inundated with products and information rather than actionable advice, my aim is to cut through that clutter. We in the financial services industry are called to be better stewards of wealth creation for the individuals and the communities we serve. A big part of my mission is to answer that call.

I lead a national team of multidisciplinary experts who together, provide objective and holistic advice to clients with specific focus on their wealth, family and business concerns. The range of advice include family office services, financial planning, trusts and estates planning, tax planning, business succession planning, philanthropy, and wealth education for the next generation. We lead with planning, and through our actionable advice, guide our clients from strategy through implementation.

My engineering background shaped my practical approach to real-life problems. Being a consultant, attorney, then advisor readied my ability to master multi-faceted issues. Now, as a wealth management executive, I drive results by attacking the complex, breaking down silos, and building scalable integrated solutions.

At my core I’m a “people-person” and I want to hear your story. I believe results are driven and amplified through relationship building and authentic connections with our clients, the team, business partners and the community.

Leading with actionable advice and authenticity, each day and every day.

Kathryn Norris

Founder & CEO
Atténuer Risk

Even when assessing all that could go wrong in a given situation, Kate Norris always maintains a sunny disposition. From analyzing cyber security threats to potential floods, she is happiest when finding those ‘I never thought it could happen to me’ scenarios and putting a plan in place to mitigate their consequences. The Principal at Atténuer Risk provides her clients with certainty that their most cherished possessions will be protected. Having served hundreds of family offices for over 25 years, on the broker, carrier, and consultant sides she is attuned to the unique challenges they face—and how to give them the peace of mind they deserve.

The self-proclaimed “insurance geek” by trade and training genuinely enjoys reading about her industry in her off hours. She gained her first exposure to high-end clientele while working for global wealth management firm Bernstein. This demographic would become the through line in her career. However, it was in her next role at Family Office Exchange that she truly found her forte (and earned her unofficial MBA in all things family office.) Norris fell in love with the intimate process of learning the ins-and-outs of her clients’ lives, and how their risk profiles had changed over time along with their financial situations. Too often she met clients who had not thought through the challenges and additional risks that came along with exceptional wealth. During this time, she developed her tried-and-true process to learn who her clients were and what they cherished most. By gathering the full picture of what matters to them, from their grandchildren to their lake house, she knows what to prioritize in terms of protection. “My favorite thing about my job has always been learning what makes my clients tick,” she muses. Norris loves personal insurance because it is about home and protecting family.

Richard Orlando

Founder & Legacy Consultant
Legacy Capitals

For over 20 years my passion has been to work with financially successful individuals & families, and the advisors who serve them.

I have a diverse educational background and hold degrees in computer science, business, and psychology. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science and business from St. John’s University, I pursued a career on Wall Street and earned his Series 7 and 63 licenses. I then returned to school and received a master’s degree in counseling/theology from Trinity International University.

Continuing my education, I earned a doctorate in family systems from Seton Hall University, during which time he interned with the New York Giants football team. My dissertation research focused on wealth management family teams. I also hold a certificate in family wealth advising from the Family Firm Institute and a certified professional coach designation from an International Coach Federation.

I wish I could say that I planned on using my family psychology and counseling degree in conjunction with the financial services industry, but I can’t. It was a perfect marriage of education and a couple decades in the global financial services industry that has brought me to where I am today. And there is no where that I would rather be then sitting at a kitchen table or a board room conference table with my clients discussing the important matters of life, family, and wealth.

One of the things I’m most proud of is my work with the Urban Hope Ministry where I sit on the board. If we are blessed to have resources, then we’re also blessed enough to be able to give and share them with others. To those whom much has been given, much is expected.

Chris Sidford

Founder & Medical Director
Black Bag

I have spent the last 30+ years teaching and practicing personal global emergency medicine in some of the most difficult conditions in the world such as the Mojave Desert and the Arctic Circle.

I live by my core values — integrity, compassion and meaningful impact. Core values developed from years of experience in national and international emergency rooms and as a U.S. Navy Officer, setting up logistics for NATO and preparing a nuclear, chemical, and biological proof hospital in Sicily.

Before I founded my current business — Black Bag Global Emergency Medicine — I was an attending physician with the world- renowned Lahey Clinic. I am a board-certified physician in emergency medicine and fellow with the American College of Emergency Medicine.

I thrive on solving the most complex medical problems in situations and environments with severe constraints on time and resources. I founded Black Bag Emergency medicine in 2009 to fill the need for 24/7 global emergency medical services that combine first-rate medical intelligence with uncompromising personal attention, discretion and privacy.

I continue to teach personal global emergency medicine through my speaking engagements and publishing conference papers and articles.

I believe you have to do good to do well and I am a committed supporter of organizations working for human rights. I support several organizations: Room to Read, World of Children, Worldwide Orphanage, Protimos, and Community Solutions.

I continue to be excited by the constantly shifting environment of global emergency medicine and the impact emerging technology will have on physicians’ ability to even better serve individuals and families, no matter their whereabouts.

Tim Volk

Founder & Managing Director
T.Volk & Company

My consulting business is centered around the development and implementation of elements that make a family and their enterprise successful. Utilizing a broad expertise in wealth management, banking, insurance and real estate development allows me to tackle any challenge from all angles. My firm promotes inclusion for all with a focus on the LGBTQ+ community and our allies.

We started a new podcast this past spring called The Rainbow Bull. It’s theme is to share secrets and insights we have learned working with wealthy families with enormous resources, where they have had success and perhaps even more insightful where they’ve experienced failure. How can we all learn to apply these lessons in our daily lives. Our target audience is the LGBTQ+ community and our allies.

As a lifelong learner and entrepreneur, the decisions I make are guided by core principles of integrity, transparency, objectivity and empathy. These apply whether the focus is on managing wealth, helping families and their business enterprises thrive or restoring the connective within families to encourage collaboration, self-awareness and stewardship. Every family member has a voice and a seat at the table for the family to thrive.

As the 4th generation of a successful family enterprise, I embrace a philosophy of servant leadership, finding great satisfaction in helping others excel in order to realize their highest potential.

I experience joy when I help others succeed. No one will ever feel sorry for a wealthy family yet they journey can be challenging at best. Most family members have no say in their wealth or how the wealth was created. Furthermore, most family members have a challenging relationship with money.

My goals is to assist clients to gain clarity on their wealth then determine the best positioning for their enterprises to maintain long-term, sustainable growth, or better said for the family to flourish. I hope my enthusiasm sparks others to foster a positive, dynamic culture with a strong client-centric orientation. I understand firsthand how to maximize human capital to address the challenges faced by multi-generational family businesses and to enhance the outcomes of their operating interests.

Over the past 25 years, I have held key leadership positions with several not-for-profit boards, focused on community service, education, health and well-being.

Outside of work, I am a vintage car aficionado and enjoy traveling the world on unique ships. I’m also a fitness enthusiast and am proud to be an avid Lady Gaga fan.

Joseph Reilly

CEO & Founder
Circulus Group

I have a passion for connecting with people and love to hear their stories. More than anything else, I like to see people succeed. I believe that the real connector between people is trust, and it all starts with the people around me.

I have extensive experience in the family office world, and consult with substantial families on their operations, allocation and long term strategy. I was the co-founder and founding president of the Family Office Association in Greenwich, and currently maintain an extensive personal network of family offices, business leaders and decision makers globally. Previously I helped to start a single family office and foundation in New York where I was an investment manager for six years. I was an energy specialist focused on options and futures trading at Crédit Agricole Indosuez in New York prior to that, and started my career at Salomon Smith Barney.

I have spoken on family office issues at many conferences and have been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, Forbes, Bloomberg, and Family Wealth Report, among others. I am on the Editorial Board of the Family Wealth Report and conduct a monthly interview series of luminaries in the family office and investment world. I was a founding member of the Family Office Council at Princeton University; am a member of the NYU Stern Family Office Council; was an advisor to the RDS Milken Family Office Council; and was formally an advisor to Addepar.

I encourage you to take a look at The Inheritance Project, which was founded in 1992, and is a collection of stories dedicated to exploring the emotional and social impact of wealth on inheritors. The main book, The Legacy of Inherited Wealth, was very influential on my work and is available free on the site.

I am also on the board of the Harvard Club of Western Massachusetts and active in the alumni association. Currently I am rereading one of my favorite books, The House of Morgan by Ron Chernow.

Her steadfast vision and commitment to the integration of independent investments, deep planning and coordination, family wellbeing, governance, and philanthropy has evolved Matter into a thought-leading multifamily office. Kathy is tremendously grateful to all the talented, dedicated associates at Matter who have shared this vision and helped her realize it over the past three decades.

Kathy works with Matter’s client teams daily and loves building lasting relationships with the complex, multigenerational families we serve. She has also been a board member of the St. Louis Boys and Girls Club and the St. Louis Zoo and brings her positive outlook, collaborative nature, and love of helping people to all the causes she supports.

While enjoying rich relationships with Matter families is a huge highlight for Kathy, her first love and priority is her own family—her husband, children, and grandchildren.
